Deceased Name: Dr. Arnold Kremen , renowned surgeon His undergraduate work in a laboratory led to a career of
surgery on the head and neck. He was 92. When it came to head and neck surgery, many doctors would
consult with Dr. Arnold Kremen before they operated. "He was in his day probably the best head and neck
surgeon in the country," said Dr. Robert Wengler, a Minneapolis
orthopedic surgeon who performed a residency under Kremen and later became
his personal physician. Kremen, 92, who found his calling while working as an
undergraduate in an animal laboratory, died of natural causes at his
Minneapolis home on Sunday. He had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for
about five years. Serving in World War II after earning a medical degree in
1937 from the University of Minnesota, Kremen operated on wounded soldiers
and airmen at muddy field hospitals, as the battle lines moved up the Italian
peninsula. He also served in England and North Africa, leaving the service as
a major. He earned a Ph.D. in surgery in 1947, also from the University of
Minnesota. As a college student, Kremen worked at an animal
laboratory in Duluth, his hometown. "That experience in the animal lab just delighted
him" and led him to surgery, said his wife, Virginia, of Minneapolis. Kremen taught at the university from 1947 to 1954, and
also was the cancer coordinator for the U.S. Health Service from 1948 to
1951. Kremen maintained a relationship with the medical school
throughout his career, training surgical residents. He also served as
director of surgical research and the University Surgical Service at Mount
Sinai Hospital in Minneapolis from 1951 to 1954. "He was a taskmaster, and he was just
excellent," Wengler recalled. A former Guthrie Theater board member, Kremen also served
on several local and national medical committees and boards, including the
editorial board of the American Journal of Surgery. He retired in 1985. Kremen's many hobbies included skiing and tennis and he
loved to bake bread, said Virginia Kremen. "He never felt it was good enough. So he kept baking.
It wasn't too good on the waistline," she said. In addition to his wife of 63 years, he is survived by
sons Dr. Alan Kremen, of Oroville, Calif., and Dr. Mark Kremen, of Omaha, and
four granddaughters. His son Jay died in 1968. A memorial service will be held on April 1 at the Woman's
